Thanks to the reorganization efforts of Mayor Bill White and Houston's volunteer spirit, the C3 Cleanups continue to grow and become more successful each month. Each month a council district of Houston holds a cleanup. The cleanup is scheduled on the third Saturday of the month and the area is chosen based on Keep Houston Beautiful's Litter Index, 911 calls about criminal activity, and 311 calls for neighborhood nuisances such as early placement of heavy trash, junked vehicles, and unkept vacant lots. The area with the highest number of calls in the designated council district is targeted for the C3 Cleanup event. The zip code determined to be the most in need of intervention based on the data receives the attention of the C3 program. It is well documented that keeping problem areas clean decreases crime while enhancing community pride.
The Neighborhood Protection Corps., Keep Houston Beautiful, District Council Members, Houston Parks and Recreation Department, Houston Police Department, Mayor's Anti-Gang Office, Public Works and Engineering, Republic Waste Services, Harris County, Solid Waste Management, and the Planning and Development Department join together to coordinate the C3 events. Republic Waste Services graciously provides breakfast, lunch, and refreshments for the volunteers. Techs and Trainers, a non-profit organization providing employment to people with special needs, has added computer recycling services to this community event. The cleanup time is 8:00 am - 12:00 pm on the third Saturday of the month. The dates and locations of the upcoming C3 events can be found on the Keep Houston Beautiful web site. This is a great opportunity for youths to earn their community service hours for school. To register call 713-839-8855.
