Safety Tips

As we work to clean up our neighborhood, we should all exercise caution so that we can prevent this day from being marred by any injury.

The following is a list of Safety Tips that will help us make this day a great success for all:

1.  Watch out for traffic.
2.  Be on the watch for snakes around logs, tall grass and other likely places.
3.  Under no circumstances should you attempt to pick up syringes or hypodermic needles.
4.  Avoid contact with poison ivy, poison oak and/or prickly thorns.
5.  Be alert to stinging insects, especially fire ants.
6.  Do not attempt to compact (squeeze) trash sacks to gain room for more trash.  Injuries from broken glass or jagged objects often occur as a result of this practice.  Fill the sack with what goes in easily and then get another bag -- we have plenty to go around!
7.  Be careful to recognize your own physical limitations.  Get help with large objects and don't overdo it.  Rest if you feel you need a break.
8.  It might be wise to designate a safety officer who is responsible for safety and trouble-shooting.  This person should have a first aid kit, a cell phone and a list of emergency phone numbers.
9.  Your block captain or safety officer has a First Aid Kit should aid be necessary.
10.  Drink plenty of fluids and bring snacks.
11.  Use sunscreen and insect repellent when appropriate.
12.  Work must be performed during daylight hours.
13.  Don't use MP3 player headsets/earbuds which interfere with hearing and warnings.  If you're listening to the latest Justin Bieber or Britney Spears song then you won't be able to hear on coming traffic.
14.  Don't engage in horseplay or pranks which could endager the safety of yourself, fellow members or distract motorists.
15.  Report any suspicious or dangerous items to police immediately.
16.  Do not attempt to pick up hazardous materials or dead animals (Fluffy could be carrying diseases).
17.  When near a road, wear light colored clothing and orange vests (everyone looks good in orange when working near a road).
18.  Work in groups, face on-coming traffic, and someone in the group should watch for approaching vehicles.
19.  Dress properly; wear heavy shoes or boots, long sleeves, a hat, gloves and long pants. No sandals, no flip-flops, no clogs.  This isn't a fashion show.
20.  Be aware of private property, and get permission from landowners before going on their land.
21.  Watch your footing; stay off rocky, steep or unstable slopes.
22.  Don't pick up litter on bridges, tunnels or overpasses because if a car is coming you have no where to go to get out of the way of danger.
23. Do not take any risks attempting to reach litter in hard-to-get-to places (up a tree, down a steep incline, in rapidly flowing water, on slippery surfaces, etc.).
24.  Wash hands after the cleanup.
25.  Take a picture of your group and send it to Keep Houston Beautiful!

If you are planning to remove illegal signs from utility poles please follow these additional guidelines:

1.  Never try to climb the pole. Stay on the ground and remove only the litter you can reach.
2.  Wear gloves and eye protection.
3.  Pick up and dispose of any nails and tacks removed. Don't leave them in the street.
4.  Stay away from any wires that may be attached to or hanging from the pole.
5.  Remove only the temporary advertising or litter signs. Do not disturb metal numbers, letters, equipment boxes, traffic signs, etc.
6.  Report any dangerous condition to your utility company.

Special notes.

1.
Please put aluminum cans into separate bags so that they can be recycled and used again for something else (it's a nice thing to do).

2.  See your block captain for specific instructions on the handling of tires at your site.
